NIF and Bank Account in Portugal: What Should You Arrange First?

In most relocation plans, the NIF comes before the Portuguese bank account. That does not mean every bank works exactly the same way, but it does mean the NIF is often the baseline requirement before the bank can move forward.
Note: this guide shares practical information based on public sources and Ponte's hands-on experience. It is not legal, tax, immigration, banking or financial advice.
Why do banks often ask for a NIF?
Because the NIF is your Portuguese tax identification number. Official NIF guidance explicitly lists bank accounts as an activity for which this number is often needed.
What is the usual practical order?
- Arrange the NIF first.
- Choose the bank route after that.
- Prepare the bank documents next.
- Then open the account and connect it to the rest of your plan.

Which documents can matter besides your NIF?
- Identification.
- Proof of address.
- Income or work context.
- Information about the source of funds.
- Documents that match your customer profile and bank route.
Do not use this as a universal bank checklist. Banks can change their requirements depending on the customer profile and the moment.
When is NIF help alone enough?
When the bank account is your next step, but the only missing piece right now is the NIF. In that case it makes sense to arrange the NIF first and finish the banking step afterwards.
Is the NIF the only thing still missing?
If your banking step is currently waiting on your Portuguese tax number, Ponte can help with practical support on the NIF application.
When is bank-account help more logical?
If you already have the NIF but are still stuck with the bank. Then it is no longer only about the NIF, but about the bank route, document fit and the rest of your practical planning. In that case, also look at bank account help or the practical bank account guide.
